Map Notes and Annotations
Pin notes at exact map coordinates, link them to a layer, reply and mark them done; guest notes from shares land straight back with you.

The classic route for site feedback is well known: a screenshot, a red circle on top, a message saying "the elevation here is wrong". Three days later nobody can find which corner was meant. A map note removes that chain: the note is pinned to its exact coordinate, linked to the relevant layer, replied to, and marked done when the work is finished. The conversation lives on the data, not in an inbox.
Leaving a note
Pick the Note tool in the measurement toolbar and click a point on the map (on the phone, Note in the tools menu). In the window that opens, write your note and optionally pick a marker — info, warning, critical, location, comment and similar icons make the note's type readable from a distance. Save drops the pin; ESC leaves the tool.
Where you click matters:
- Click on a layer — orthophoto, 3D model, point cloud — and the note is linked to that layer. The note window gains a Go to linked layer button, and the layer panel lists the note beneath that layer.
- Click on bare ground and the note is general; the panel gathers it in the Notes section.
Notes are not limited to the map: you can leave them in the point cloud viewer and in the analysis workspace as well.
Notes in the layer panel
Every note row in the left panel shows a short preview and a date; clicking the row flies the map to the note and opens its window. Hover the row and four actions appear:
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Include in shares | Adds the note to active shares or removes it; the badge shows how many shares it appears in |
| Edit note | Changes the text; copies in shares are updated too |
| Go to note | Takes the camera to the pin |
| Delete note | Deletes the note and its copies in shares (asks for confirmation) |
Conversation and the done mark
Clicking a note opens a window that shows more than the text — it shows the Conversation: replies from your team and from guests in one chronological thread, guest messages carrying a Guest badge. Continue from the box below with Reply. If the note appears in several shares, Reply goes to lets you pick which share's guests receive the reply; if the note is in no share, the window says so plainly — guests will not see your reply.
When the work is closed, press Mark done: the note gets a Done badge and shows as resolved in lists; Reopen brings it back if needed. Replies never create separate pins — the pin is always the root note, and the conversation grows inside it.
Notes on a shared map
Notes flow through a share in both directions.
From you to guests. When saving a note, tick the active shares it should appear in from the Add to shares list (All / None); you can add or remove shares later from the panel. Tick nothing and the note stays with you. Guests of a ticked share see the note; in a PIN-protected share they can reply, in a public share they can only read.
From guests to you. A recipient who opens the shared map can click a point in the scene, write a note with Leave note and choose Who can see it?: Only me, Me + owner (default) or Everyone. They can edit and delete their own note and write replies. These notes are persistent and come to you: as pins on the map, and in the Active Share Links window under the link's Guest notes list — Reply, Mark as resolved, Open on map. When unread guest notes exist, the View active shares button shows the count. Unlike measurements, guest notes survive the end of the session; if you remove a person from a share, their notes are removed with them. The full set of sharing rules is in PIN-protected sharing.
Where to keep track
- Home dashboard: the Shares card shows "n new notes" per project, the Activity section lists "Note added" events, and Notifications surfaces guest notes.
- Shares page: all projects' active links together with Project Notes and General notes in one list; Open on map takes you straight to the note.
Where it pays off
- Site findings: drop the problem seen in the field ("culvert blocked", "excavation past the boundary") on the relevant orthophoto with the critical marker; the office opens the exact spot.
- Marking things up for a client: note the places you want to draw attention to before the presentation and add them to the share; when the client opens the link, the pins are waiting.
- Revision tracking: every change request is a note, every finished job a Mark done. Open notes are the to-do list; resolved ones are the record.
